Speaking and listening

Many deaf people communicate through spoken English.

Some people only use speaking and listening to communicate. Other people have British Sign Language (BSL) as their first language, but they like to speak sometimes too. Others use a mix of speaking and signing.

Lots of deaf people who speak have technology that helps them with their hearing. They might use things like hearing aids or cochlear implants. However, some people choose not to use technology.

Many deaf people who use speech also use other methods at the same time. They might use lip-reading or use signs as they speak (Sign Supported English (SSE)).
