This online workshop is suitable for all professionals who work closely with deaf children, young people and their families. 

Training overview

Raising a child with hearing loss or deafness can be challenging, and families may need guidance and support to help understand the impact hearing loss or deafness can have.

In this training you'll learn a wealth of ideas and strategies to help you improve the way you support parents and carers.

The training is designed to teach you how to use our resources and tools with the families you support.

Location

This workshop will be held online on Zoom.

Cost

This training costs £70.

What you'll learn

  • the emotional impact of parenting a deaf child on parents’ confidence and self-esteem
  • developing good communication in families and with professionals
  • raising self-esteem, resilience and confidence in parents and deaf children
  • behaviour management techniques.

CPD accreditation

3.25 CPD hours / points. Certified by CPD UK.

You'll receive a certificate when you complete the training.

Accessibility

Communication support, including captions and British Sign Language (BSL) interpreting, is available on request when booking.

Preparation

Before the workshop we'll ask you to complete:

  • a short survey: to tell us a little bit about how confident you feel working with deaf children and families.
  • e-learning module: an e-learning module that will take about one hour to complete. You're welcome to work through this at your own pace and you can revisit it anytime.

The survey and the e-learning module will be available on our online training hub, before the workshop. You can create an account on our training hub when you book your place.

Meet the trainer

Sian Wilson

Sian has worked at the National Deaf Children’s Society since 2011 supporting families of deaf children and professionals who work with deaf children.

Sian has over 30 years’ experience of supporting children and their families, including six years in a specialist unit for deaf children in a a primary school and 11 years working in a deprived area in Wales as part of Sure Start.

Sian initially qualified as an NNEB and also has a degree in Childhood Studies. She has qualified with Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People (CACDP) stage 2.

If you cancel:

  • 7 working days or less before the planned date, you'll be charged 100% of the total cost
  • 8-14 working days before the planned date, you'll be charged 50% of the total cost
  • 15 working days before the planned date, you won't be charged.

You can also give your place to a colleague or friend but please let us know at least 3 days before the workshop.
