Devon siblings run London Marathon for deaf children
Published Date: 22 Apr 2024Four siblings from the Helliar family conquered the London Marathon in support of the National Deaf Children’s Society on Sunday 21 April. Katrina, 36, Alex, 32, and Hattie, 30, from Woodbury, near Exeter, were joined by their Sheffield-based brother Seb, 34, for the world-famous event.
The family hopes to raise in the region of £8,000 for the National Deaf Children’s Society, which supports the UK’s 50,000 deaf children and their families. This will boost their total for a year’s worth of fundraising to nearly £25,000.
They chose to run for the National Deaf Children’s Society because Seb’s son, Rupert, 2, was born deaf and his family has been receiving ongoing support from the charity.
Seb said:
“Sunday's culmination of all the fundraising and training was absolutely incredible. The energy and support in London was phenomenal, and although I found a lot of it very tough, it’s been one of the most meaningful and rewarding things I’ve ever completed. I already want to do it again!”
Hattie added:
“An amazing atmosphere on an incredible day. Overwhelmed with how much we have managed to raise for the National Deaf Children’s Society. Turns out a marathon is possible with the support of siblings!”
Hannah Awesome, who supports fundraisers for the National Deaf Children’s Society, said:
“I want to say a huge thank you to the Helliar family for taking on this challenge for us. To have so many siblings fundraise for us is truly humbling, and for you all to conquer the London Marathon is a fantastic achievement. We’re so very proud of you all.
“The National Deaf Children’s Society is dedicated to supporting the UK’s 50,000 deaf children and their families. The efforts of selfless fundraisers like the Helliars will help us to keep on doing our vital work, now and into the future.”
